Newcastle United to accept 'extortionate bid' for star player - Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle United will only sell their star players if “extortionate” bids come in for them this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes a lot of the Magpies’ players will be happy to remain at the club and continue playing under Eddie Howe.

Newcastle’s European hopes suffered a blow when they were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United on 15 May.

That defeat leaves them seventh in the Premier League table, three points behind sixth-placed Chelsea heading into the final game of the season against Brentford.

Newcastle could keep hold of star players this summer

Wyness doesn’t expect much turnover of the Magpies’ squad even if they don’t manage to qualify for Europe this season.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “A lot of their players will be happy to stay with Eddie Howe.

“I don’t see much turnover unless it’s something that both parties want. I think they are still buying into it.

“Newcastle will come back with a stronger squad once the injuries are fixed. They may add a couple of players as well.

“I really don’t see a big exodus of their star players unless extortionate bids come in for them.

“I think Newcastle are in a pretty solid position to go forward.”
