Man United could move to Goodison Park in 'bombshell' twist - Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man United will be forced to move temporarily away from Old Trafford if they decide to redevelop the stadium.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO with the Toffees between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Goodison Park as a potential home for the Red Devils in the north-west.

In March, Man United set up an expert task force to plan to regenerate Old Trafford and build one of the best stadiums in the world.

The move comes after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment into the club and amid criticism about the state of their current 74,310-seater stadium.

Ratcliffe claimed the club has a “once in-a-century opportunity” to build a new ground comparable to Wembley, the Nou Camp and the Santiago Bernabeu.

Man United could move into Wembley or Goodison Park, says Wyness

Wyness insisted Man United’s stadium situation is “urgent” and encouraged club chiefs to “get a move on”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Man United have been looking for a long time at either redeveloping Old Trafford or building a new stadium.

“I think they’re on the side of revamping Old Trafford in some way.

“It is something they need to do. The facility hasn’t been looked after properly, the Glazers haven’t done a good job at all.

“There seems to have been a lack of love for the stadium, it looks awful.

“There’s a lot of thought going into this.

“But if they don’t build a new stadium next to Old Trafford, they’re going to have to find somewhere to play.

“I’ve seen Wembley suggested – which isn’t so far-fetched.

“I can’t imagine the fans would be over the moon with that.

“Here’s a bombshell – Goodison Park will be free from next season, when Everton move into Bramley-Moore Dock.

“At least it would keep the games in the north-west.

“I say that with a smile because I know there would be issues and problems.

“But nevertheless, there are pros and cons. I don’t think there are any other possible stadiums in the area.

“Man United are going to have to get a move on, because this is an urgent situation.”
