Steve Bruce keen on stunning Birmingham City return - sources

Steve Bruce is keen on making a stunning return to Birmingham City as the club’s manager going into next season, sources have told Football Insider.

Bruce, 63, is not yet ready to finish his managerial career and still has ambitions of guiding a new team, with the possible vacancy at his old club putting him on alert.

This comes after Football Insider revealed that Tony Mowbray may not return to manage Birmingham, having been on a medical leave of absence since February.

Meanwhile, sources also told Football Insider that the Blues’ board had already decided Gary Rowett will not be kept on beyond this season.

Following their relegation from the Championship, which was officially confirmed despite a win against Norwich on the final day of the season, Birmingham could turn to the experienced boss to bring them back up.

He is believed to have let it be known to his old club that he is interested in the post, which will be in League One next season, should it be available.

Having previously achieved promotion twice in his last spell with the Blues, both from the Championship, to the Premier League, Bruce presents an interesting, albeit surprising option.

Bruce managed Birmingham from 2001 to 2007, having previously played for the club between 1996 and 1998.

He left the Blues in May 2007 for a then-world record £3million compensation fee after disagreements with the ownership.

West Brom

His most recent managerial spell was with West Brom before he was sacked in 2022, leading many to believe he would retire from management.

However, with the Birmingham opening possibly presenting itself, a stunning return to the Midlands is now on the cards.
