Stelling insists only two Man Utd players can say they've had good seasons

Jeff Stelling has insisted only Alejandro Garnacho and Diogo Dalot can emerge from Manchester United’s dismal season with any credit.

United have endured a miserable campaign in what is Erik ten Hag’s second year in charge at Old Trafford. They look set to miss out on a place in the Champions League for next season, with fourth-place Aston Villa 11 points ahead heading into the final nine games.

The manner of United’s performances in recent weeks has also sparked concern, with Ten Hag’s side lucky to escape relegation-threatened Brentford with a draw last week. But Stelling does believe some players have impressed.

He picked out young winger Garnacho and fullback Dalot as the two who can look back on the season with positivity. The veteran broadcaster believes Garnacho has carried United’s main threat for much of the campaign.

He told talkSPORT: “If I were to say to you ‘Which Man United players have had good seasons this season?’, it wouldn’t be a long list. Dalot has had a really good season. I think Garnacho, who was subbed the other night, has been their main threat.”

Boss Ten Hag has picked out Garnacho’s connection with Dalot as a key reason for their success. The Argentine scored a goal of the season contender in the win over Everton earlier this season, with his manager delighted with how well the partnership with Dalot is going.

“Sometimes, we have to adjust this but, lately, it has worked out very well, and we want to keep that consistency with Diogo and Garnacho, over the right side, because they have their connection,” he said.

“Also, Diogo, I know, has a very good connection with Antony. So, most of the time, we want to keep such routines and that is why I chose lately for this partnership. Keep Diogo more on the right side.”

Dalot has praised Ten Hag for his management, having made 39 appearances this term. The fullback’s career has been revitalised under the Dutchman, having fallen out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Sometimes you just click with managers and players or team-mates and I think as soon as he came, that happened. The way that he sees football, the way that he sees the full-back position, I think it suits really well to what I see and what I like as well,” he said in January.

“I think it was a good match; him, me and other players. You could see that we had many players that started really well since he came. I like to say that it is a good match and I’m hoping that it keeps like that.”

“I look at the small wins. Sometimes you look at winning by just winning trophies or achievements with the team, but for me, it’s been the small things, looking back and seeing the way that I fought to stay at this club, getting a position in the team, and that for me has been the biggest achievement so far.”
