Rangers told to sell Hagi - 'Won't get away with that', says pundit

Ianis Hagi has no future at Rangers as his “levels dropped” below the club’s standards.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie claimed Hagi, 25, is a “decent” player, but was adamant the club should cash in on him.

The attacking midfielder was sent out on a season-long loan to Spanish side Alavez last summer but has struggled to earn minutes having made just four appearances, all from the bench, in the last 12 La Liga games.

Hagi, whose Rangers deal expires in 2026, is reportedly being eyed for a permanent move to Turkish giants Galatasaray – the club where his father Gheorghe spent the final four years of his playing career.

Rangers star Ianis Hagi’s future “lies away from Ibrox

McAvennie suggested that Hagi was not in manager Philippe Clement’s long-term plans at Ibrox as he is unable to meet the demands and deal with the pressure of playing for Rangers.

“I think Clement has his visions of who stays and who goes,” he told Football Insider.

“I think Hagi has been decent for them but he’s just not been consistent.

“When you’re at Celtic or Rangers, you have to do it week in and week out.

“I talk about [Celtic midfielder] Matt O’Riley and people say I’m a bit harsh on him, but I’m not hard on him – it’s just the Celtic standards.

“And I think Rangers have that standard too.

“Hagi is a decent player, but his levels dropped.

“He won’t get away with that.

“He can go to Galatasaray or Aberdeen or something – they can draw or lose games and nobody bothers them.

“But not at Rangers.

“As decent as Hagi has been, I think his future lies away from Ibrox.”
