Disgraced ex-Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales blames 'being a man' for arrest

Ex-Spanish Football Association president Luis Rubiales has said the prospect of facing prison time over last summer’s “kissgate” scandal is “because I’m a man”, adding that he “cannot understand that anyone could think this was a sexual assault.”

The disgraced ex-Spanish chief was detained yesterday by Spanish investigators amid an ongoing £100million corruption probe, which is unrelated to the ongoing charges of sexual assault and coercion brought against the 46-year-old by Spanish international Jennifer Hermoso following last summer’s Women’s World Cup.

Prosecutors want Rubiales to be jailed for two-and-a-half years over his actions following the showpiece event, which included subjecting Hermoso to what she maintains was an “unsolicited” kiss as the world champion received her winner’s medal and then repeated attempts to coerce Hermoso to defend his actions in the aftermath.

A Madrid judge recently paved the way for a trial to be held later this year.

Rubiales resigned after the incident in spectacular fashion following censure from all corners of the footballing and governing world. FIFA also levied a three-year football ban against the former Spanish chief.

However, Rubiales has continued to defend his actions against “false feminism” and in a recent interview, maintained that his position as a man has led to his current predicament.

Speaking to LaSexta , he said: “I have a clear conscience. Things have become crazy. A small thing has gone on to devour a person. I wanted to be calm and get out of the spotlight. False feminism? What I said is said. I defend egalitarianism. Feminism advocates supporting women to achieve equality.

“For me there is no crime. It’s my opinion. I asked her the question [over the kiss] and she said: ‘Okay’. You can’t question Hermoso. I can. Is it because I’m a man? They want to curtail freedom of thought.”

He added: “I cannot understand that anyone could think this was a sexual assault.” In response to the allegations of coercion, he claimed that he “only spoke 10 or 15 seconds with Miss Hermoso”.
