World Cup winner ‘disappointed’ player ‘had to go’ to Tottenham – Would have preferred him to sign elsewhere – Sport Witness

One of the big transfers that caught the attention of the Italian media and that is still being talked about to this day is Tottenham’s purchase of Guglielmo Vicario.

Many have already expressed their disappointment at the fact the big clubs in Italy were not able to secure his services, and seeing him excel in the Premier League has frustrated more than one.

Marco Amelia is one of those, speaking to Gli Sportivi della Domenica on Radio Cusano Campus, relayed by Ventonuovo, who had a few words to say about the player’s transfer to Tottenham,.

Believing that Italy is the ‘best school’ for goalkeepers, the 2006 World Cup winner, then touched upon the move to Spurs.

He said: “I am disappointed to think that, especially this year, Vicario had to go to the Premier League. Someone from the top (in Italy) could have taken him. However, Vicario went on an even bigger journey than playing in Serie A with a top club. He went to Tottenham and is doing very well.”

Vicario was brought in as a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris, who called it a day on his time at Tottenham after last season, but failed to secure a move away until January, when he signed for LAFC in the MLS.

Since arriving at Spurs, Vicario has played in 26 games, conceded 37 goals and kept six clean sheets.
